Introduction

The World Wide Panorama event of the third quarter of 2022 is a collection of panoramas with the common theme of “Climate Change”.

Theme Essay: Climate Change

The essay conveys the team’s idea of the event. It is usually published together with the Theme announcement and offers a starting point for the contributing photographers.

Climate Change

"Climate change" sounds somehow too innocent for what currently is happening. Some, mostly younger people, prefer to call it climate crisis, since it is man made and hence different from the natural change which always happened.

Some years ago, when we had an event with almost the same theme (Weather / Climate), it was not possible to say whether a heat wave was due to natural variation, which always occurs, or whether it was made more likely by global warming. This changed some time ago when the new discipline of attribution research was introduced.

Friederike Otto, one of the founders of this discipline, says that climate change is nothing we must fear in the future, since it's already here. The current heat wave in the Northern Hemisphere proves it, as well as other occasions of extreme weather: droughts, wildfires or hurricanes in the past years.

There should be plenty of subjects for this event. But don't think of those direct consequences only, also think about protests against it. End of September there will be the next global climate strike by Fridays for Future. Shoot the demonstrations, show how many not only young people try to remind the politicians to do the right thing.

But also think of other means, f.e. how to save energy or produce sustainable one. Or show us what further warming will destroy: Forests (by drought or wildfire), lakes (drying out), glaciers. I guess you also have own ideas. Show how great this planet is and help to make it great again!
