The Fairmount Water Works operated as a municipal waterworks supplying water to Philadelphia for much of the 1800s. It pumped water from the Schuylkill River to a reservoir at the top of a nearby hill which supplied the city. It was an engineering and technological wonder and was one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country.

Today one of the engine houses is being used as The Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center, an education center informing the public about the watershed and the history of the Water Works.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art now stands where the reservoir once was.

The tallest skyscraper in the skyline is the soon-to-be completed Comcast Center.
