The "Solarsiedlung" in Freiburg is a suburban colony which consists of 58 houses and and one living and office block, the "Sonnenschiff". These houses are called Plus-Energy-Houses, since they produce more energy than they consume. Glass fronts facing towards the sun, perfect insulation and an intricate system of aircirculation reduce heating to a minimum. Solar energy collectors produce heat and electricity.

The panorama is taken from the top of the four storied office block "Sonnenschiff" on top of which are several penthouses built in the same style as the houses below on the ground.

The "Solarsiedlung" is said to be the most modern solar housing project in Europe.
