After coming under Habsburg rule in 1368, Freiburg was under a Catholic reign for centuries and all the churches were Roman Catholic.
There was one exception, however: the Melanchthon-Church, presumably the oldest church in Freiburg. It is located in a part of Freiburg called Haslach. Haslach used to be its own village, but became part of the city of Freiburg in 1890. As a village, Haslach belonged to the Margraviate of Baden-Durlach. In 1556 Margrave Karl II. introduced the Reformation to his territory, making Melanchthon Church protestant, which it remains to this day.
What makes the Melanchthon-Church exceptional?
• It is the oldest church in Freiburg.
• It was the first Protestant church in Freiburg.
A few facts about the building:
• The steeple dates back to Romanesque times.
• The nave has Romanesque and Gothic features.
• The portal and choir were built in Gothic style in the 14th century.
