El Fondo is a water nature reserve located between the municipal districts of Elche and Crevillente.

The current reserve is about 10km from the seashore and is 2.387 hectares. This is just a small part of what remains from the Albufera de Elche (Elche's Lagoon) which has been drained through the years for different reasons.

It is of great ecological interest, being rich in various sorts of fauna, mainly bird, but also fish, reptile and even crustacean. It is also rich in flora, both wet and dry. The typical palm tree of the area and some eucalyptus are also present, making it a very characteristic environment.

The pano was taken at the shore of one of the ponds in the reserve. This particular one is at a saltmarsh area, and so is named "El Saladar". Some of the typical vegetation is shown. Reeds ("Phragmites australis") and rushes ("Scirpus lacustris") can be seen along the bank of the lagoon. Inland typical species such as glaucous glassworts ("Arthrocnemum macrostachyum") and shrubby seablites ("Suaeda vera") can also be seen.

El Fondo is a national reserve since 1988 and has also European (EU) and international recognition (RAMSAR).

More info about El Fondo can be found directly at the reserve web page.
