With it's long history and spectacular vantage point overlooking the ancient city of Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera ("Pure Water Temple") is considered one of Kyoto's finest temples.
The temple was founded in 780 and honors the popular 11-faced Kannon (goddess of mercy). It has been partially destroyed by fire several times over the centuries. Most of the present buildings generally date from a reconstruction completed in 1633. Kiyomizu-dera received World Cultural Heritage Listing by UNESCO in December 1994.
This panorama was shot during the annual Hana Tourofestival during which many temples and streets are illuminated with lanterns.
