Canadian Tulip Festival

In 1945, the Netherlands sent 100,000 tulips bulb to Ottawa as a sign of appreciation and gratitude for the role Canada played in the liberation of Holland and providing Queen Juliana and her daughters a safe war time home in Ottawa.

For the birth of Princess Margriet in 1943 the maternity ward at the Ottawa Civic Hospital was declared extraterritorial, ensuring the baby would have Dutch citizenship alone.

The Canadian Tulip Festival began celebrating the tulip an international symbol of friendship and peace in 1953.

In 2018 almost 250,000 tulips, representing 60 different varieties were planted in Commissioners Park.
