Situated on the south-eastern coastline of Wales, between Cardiff and Swansea, Ogmore Castle guards a major fording place into southern Wales. It sits on flat land rather than atop a ridge-crest where nature would have provided extra defense. The Normans made their claim to this area as early as 1116, when William de Londres established the first castle at the site. In 1126, his son, Maurice, reinforced the castle by creating a keep and a rectangular great tower. Once rising over 40 feet high, the first story contained the great hall with an ornate fireplace. A staircase led from the hall to the next story above, which served as apartments for the lord and his family.

The site is extensively ruined and now in the care of CADW (Welsh Historic Monuments). It is freely accessible to the public and offers a great place to enjoy a picnic and a moment of relaxation.
