Hólavallargarður cemetery was consecrated in 1838 and is one of the largest and oldest cemeteries in Iceland. Many renowned 19th and 20th century Icelanders are buried here.

The memorials in the cemetery are highly diverse and bear testimony to different trends in makes and symbols. The panorama shows the gravestones of Treasurer Árni Thorsteinson (1828–1907), his wife Soffía Kristjana Thorsteinson (1839–1914) and several descendants. Each polished black granite gravestone carries a bas-relief portrait in copper of the deceased person.

The cemetery is designated as a protected area in Reykjavík’s master plan 2004–2024, among other things due to its diversity in vegetation and birdlife.
