The Pueblo Indians of New Mexico and Arizona, particularly the Hopi and Zuni tribes, have ceremonies in which masked men called Kachinas, wearing costumes and body paint, play an important role.  A Kachina is a supernatural being and  is impersonated by the man wearing the mask.  Traditionally, small dolls are carved from the roots of cottonwood trees to represent  the same likeness.
