Caption
The Seattle Gas Works was built in 1906 to make 'illuminating' gas from coal. They called it 'illuminating' to distinguish it from natural gas. It was converted from coal gasification to oil gasification in the mid 1930s. The plant eventually closed in 1956. The city acquired the property, cleaned up the hazardous waste, and opened it as a park. It is now a favorite hangout for Canadian geese, and some people.
