The Jordaan Festival is held every year in September and has its roots in the small, historical Jordaan quarter of Amsterdam (or Mokum, as the locals say). During three days, a colorful and often very loud mix of local amateur-Caruso's, pub singers and accomplished musical artists crowd the stage to present the Dutch levenslied (sentimental songs about life and its happier and sadder moments) in all its variations.

For more information about the festival (Dutch language only) see http://www.jordaanfestival.nl

For an informative article about the typically Dutch levenslied and its sadder counterpart, the smartlap, see http://www.mareonline.nl/2004/26/englishpages.html
