These colourful flags have been planted by the road at the East and West approaches to the town of St Austell, Cornwall in South West England to brighten the place up a bit. What a great idea!

What I particularly like about the flags is that there's nothing nationalistic (or regionalistic) about them and they're not directly promoting anything or trying to communicate a message. Their only apparent purpose is to add a splash of colour to an otherwise unremarkable stretch of road.

The flags were created by local flag maker Lucy Birbeck.
