The "Rendsburger Hochbruecke", a railway bridge made of steel, 2500 meters in length and 41 meters height, was built between 1911 and 1913.
Several kilometers long ramps were needed to achieve the height of 41 meters. The length of the complete construction is over 7 kilometers.

A ferry crossing the Kiel Canal is anchored to the bridge by steel cables, a unique type of construction of which only about 8 exist worldwide. It has a carrying capacity of 42 tons and is still in operation.

The Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, internationally known as the Kiel Canal, is a 98 kilometer waterway linking the North Sea to the Baltic Sea.
Construction started in June 1887 at Holtenau near Kiel. It took about 8900 workers eight years to build the Kiel Canal.

Today it is the world's busiest artificial waterway - more than 39.000 vessels transited the Kiel-Canal in 2003.
