An “exception” to this area’s natural rugged beauty and navigational significance.

Newfoundland and Labrador was a colony of Great Britain throughout World War II. Cape Spear is the closest point of land between North America and Europe. Being on a direct convoy route from Europe to the North American continent, Cape Spear played an important defensive role during the Battle of the Atlantic. In 1941, this coastal defense battery, equipped with two 10" guns was constructed to protect the entrance to St. John's Harbour. For more detail on this, visit Parks Canada’s web site at:
