The intriguing corner of the bonesetter (Alice Taverne Museum’s collection).

Alice Taverne’s Museum in Ambierle opened to visitors at the beginning of the nineteen-fifties.

The museum is named after its creator, Alice Taverne (1904-1969) known for her studies of rural customs dating back to the thirties.

Located in an 18th century mansion, the museum’s collections are spread over three levels. Visitors are impressed by the diversity and richness of the themes  proposed, each presented in an intimate context. The historical reconstitution of the interiors have been accomplished with  great respect of authenticity

In the museum you can find: a peasant’s living-room with its central hearth, a village grocery store, a typical19th century inn, a seamstress’ workshop, a classroom, a doctor’s surgery, and also the intriguing, and eerie corner of the bonesetter, sometimes considered by some as a witch doctor..

Furnishings, clothing and fashion collections are showcased in a special area. Souvenirs of secular or religious ceremonies, as well as agricultural and handicraft equipment, reflect the lifestyle of Roanne’s countryside and the Forez province between 1840 and 1940.
