The city of Peoria, Arizona is a major suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. With a population of over 155,000 it is the ninth largest city in the state. Named after its namesake Peoria, Illinois the city was established in the 1880's. The city grew rapidly primarily due to a canal system which irrigated the land supporting their farming community. Today Peoria is a world-class educational and cultural destination. It is home for the Challenger Space Center as well as the spring training center for the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners. In 2007 the city completed the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts and in 2010 Sterling energy completed a 1.5 MW solar power plant. All this was made possible due to a solid foundation passed on by a few settlers some 130 years ago.
