Orleans Manufacturing Company
1810 - 1884

Two hundred years ago, in 1810, a group of Rehoboth, Massachusetts citizens established the Palmer River Manufacturing Company, a cotton spinning mill on the site of the old Joshua Smith grist and saw mill along the Palmer River. The mill was enlarged in 1826 and began to manufacturing fine cotton cloth as the Orleans Manufacturing Company. The mill was totally destroyed by fire in 1831. Rebuilt but burned out again in 1884, the mill ceased operations. Little of the old mill's ruins are still stand.
