In the Middle Ages Kirkjubour was the cutural and spiritual centre of the Faroe Island. In the background you see the ruins of St.Magnus Cathedral (appointed as World Heritage Site) from late 13th century and the whitewashed Saint Olav's Church from the 12th century is the oldest church on Faroe island still in use. Kirkjubour once had a communtiy at around 50 houses around the churches and the wooden house, Kirkjubøargarður, from 11th century and still inhabited. After the reformation, a snowslide and a storm the took some of the land Kirkjubour is now a small but stil living community.
