This is a fairly new amphitheater in downtown Salem, Oregon. Its unique shape is mostly seen from the outside, but is also evident from the inside when looking up at the structure. It’s also possible to see several other distinctive shapes: the sphere of a large globe and the graceful curves of a pedestrian bridge.

Everything has a shape, but we usually don’t think about that unless there is something out of the ordinary. In this case, perhaps it’s because the graceful curves seen here contrast with the boxy buildings in the downtown. Or maybe these structures surprise us because they are clearly not natural, and we generally don’t associate such lines with man-made structures. Or maybe we just find such shapes beautiful, and they stand out for that reason.

At any rate, seeing these different striking shapes in one spot seemed appropriate for this quarter’s theme.
