Since 1924 a nearby weir is used to provide a hydroelectric generation plant with a controlled stream of water from the river Isar. Since then the dam resulted in a physical barrier for fish and other fauna and thus prevented migration up and down that river.

Time and awareness changes and now there is a newly built stream that is long enough to bypass that barrier.

Like other systems using relatively low steps (hence fish ladder) this solution can slow down the water enough over a length of about 1.3 km (0.8 miles) for fish to climb upstream.

Another more compact fish passage directly at the weir is designed to lead fish on their way downstream.
