Café de Spuyt is a 'brown café', one of Amsterdam's traditional pubs. These are proper local bars, exactly the kind of place you should go if you want to get a feel for real local life. They serve a wide selection of local and regional beers (just look at the list on the wall!), and they are low-key and friendly. If you're not sure what beer to pick ask whoever's behind the bar or whoever's sitting near you.

I went to this bar twice during my short visit to Amsterdam. On first time there I met someone who helped me select a number of delicious brews. He lives in Amsterdam, and it turned out that he's a writer for the oldest 'lad's magazine' in existence, which is called... Panorama! Seriously, the synchronicity was delightful.
