Canadian singer/songwriter Susan Cogan busking at Fan Tan Alley

Fan Tan alley is located in Canada's oldest Chinatown, in downtown Victoria, British Columbia. The alley is extremely narrow, a bit more than 4 ft. (1.3m) in places, and the 3 storied red brick buildings on each side give it a canyon-like feel. In the past it was an access for a maze of secret passages, escape routes, opium dens, gambling houses and brothels. Today, as a well-preserved historical site it houses a variety of stores, studios and businesses.
