Growing, making and drinking wine is a vital part of the regional culture. And of course culture is another word for growing...

Only a few hundred meters from our home in Merzhausen on the slopes of the Schönberg the wine "Freiburger Jesuitenschlössle" is grown. The winery is just up the hill behind the trees.

In this early state the plants have been cut and tied to the wires in order to sustain the heavy grapes that will grow throughout the summer.

The Jesuitenschlössle is a manor house ('schlössle' means 'small castle') built by the Society of Jesus in 1666 and now owned by a foundation. It contains not only the winery but also a restaurant and is a piece of cultural heritage of it's own.

The chapel is a Schönstatt shrine.
