The Charlie Hebdo shooting atrocity in January 2015 was a shock to the world. As a professional journalist, lecturer and passionate believer in freedom it cut me deeply.

A month before my wife and I had booked a weekend trip to Paris, so we found ourselves heading over on an unusually empty Eurostar, ten days after the event. It was an incredibly emotional time. The 'Je Suis Charlie' slogan was everywhere, from graffiti on walls to huge banners hung from high-end fashion boutiques.

This memorial is at Boulevard Richard Lenoir, 75011 Paris. After I took this panorama I went off to one side to pack my gear away. A woman arrived with two children, aged somewhere between 7 and 10. She crouched down, hugged them and explained what the shrine was for as they stood in serious contemplation.

I am so glad we went to Paris and paid our respects – but I still find it really hard to write about it.
