A multitude of species of fish and birds join together in a massive feeding frenzy at Ilot Mato, in the great southern lagoon of New Caledonia. The predators coordinate their attack in a successful attempt to panic and divide the tightly packed school of anchovies. The action goes on non-stop for over three hours until the entire school of anchovies is gobbled up. Huge jacks, barracudas, snappers, even sharks attack from below while sea gulls, noddy and black-naped turns gobble up the anchovies from above.

The Great Southern Lagoon is part of the world's largest coral reef lagoon and integrated with the New Caledonia World Heritage Site. Ilot Mato is 27 nautical miles from Noumea and is one of 10 anchorages listed in the Cruising Guide to New Caledonia.
