Basalt columns were used as house foundations from the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Some of the older houses still have the basalt as the foundation. The cliffs are part of Skinner's Butte, a lovely park easily available from downtown and within a few blocks of REI. Climbers often are found free climbing up the cliffs. When I arrived a group of climbers were pulling down their ropes- reporting that the crisp 34 degrees F was just too cold with the sun setting. I was disappointed to have missed the climbers. One climber, John, a local who attends Tasmania University, offered to free climb (in bare feet) so that I may have a climber in my picture.
