The eastern side of Shiroyama (literally "Castle Mountain"), a Tokushima landmark, has a pleasant spot that was once a castle tower. Today it honors fallen soldiers (if I recall correctly) and provides a good view of the city and traces of the Pacific Ocean to a background of singing birds, children's voices, and locomotives' groans and rumbles.

The castle itself was torn down over a century ago by the people as proof of loyalty to a new lord. All that remains today are the castle's stone foundation, stairs, moat, and main gate, Washi no Mon Mae.
