In 1774 a garden was proposed to be planted on the grounds of Pennsylvania Hospital to provide physicians a source of ingredients for medicines. It was approved, but eventually shelved for financial reasons. In 1976, the planting of the Physic Garden was finally done as a project for the bicentennial anniversary of the United States. More than 100 plants with medicinal properties that were used in the 1700s are in the garden. It is open to the public during daylight hours.History of Pennsylvania Hospital
