Built on the grounds of Adelaide's Botanic Garden the Bicentennial Conservatory was opened in November 1989 to celebrate Australia's Bicentenary. It stands at 100 metres long and 27 metres high, and is the largest single span conservatory in the Southern hemisphere. Inside the steel and glass structure are upper and lower walkways which lead you through the canopy and rainforest floor. It is home to tropical rainforest plants from northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the nearby Pacific Islands as well as a small population of White-browed Wood Swallows and Noisy Pittas -- birds introduced to naturally combat insect pests.
