The Hudson's Bay Company established the original Fort Langley in 1827. It served as part of a network of fur trade forts operating in the New Caledonia and Columbia Districts (now British Columbia and northern Washington). Integral to the success of any outpost was the establishment and maintenance of a kitchen garden. The garden would supply fresh vegetables and herbs to the occupants of the Fort for a good portion of the year. Food preservation and storage techniques were basic; no doubt the winter menu was somewhat limited! The Fort Langley National Historic Site of Canada is open year round.Location
