Recently, Washington D.C opened a new street car line for the first time since 1962. At one time you could travel across D.C. via streetcar until they were replaced by buses and automobiles. After a strike in 1955, the company changed ownership and became DC Transit, which issued explicit instructions to switch to buses. The system was dismantled in the early 1960s and the last street car ran on January 28, 1962.I heard stories from older relatives of traveling by street car from downtown out to Glen Echo Park, an amusement park that operated in the early 20th century. Now an arts and cultural center, most of the rides are gone. Glen Echo Park once had an old streetcar parked on the tracks at the front entrance. Due to lack of funds for renovation, the car has since been removed.
