This is a touching memorial to hard working souls and a vivid reminder of the harsh reality of our ocean heritage. The statue shows a father embracing his son as they and 78 lives perished on the ice in the great Newfoundland sealing disaster of 1914. Over 250 sealers died in two simultaneous disasters.I chose this as my Best of 2017 for the significant contrast between the cold, harsh and tragic scene depicted in the statue and the warmth, beauty and peace on the day I captured this image.
