The River Mersey has its beginnings near Stockport and flows westwards for some 70 miles towards the Irish Sea. The Mersey is an essential part of Liverpool's history. The ferries are world famous and are the longest running in the world - more than 850 years - when it used to be operated by Monks back in the Middle Ages. In 1815, steam ferry boats were introduced and became immortalized in the 60's song "Ferry Cross the Mersey", by Gerry Marsden and the Pacemakers. There are alternatives means of crossing the River Mersey via three tunnels beneath the River.

It clearly shows the close relationship between the development of man and Water.
