No where else except in Sardinia does so many Bronze Age structures still exist in good condition. On the island there are still over 7,000 well preserved structures called nuraghi, for which no parallel exists anywhere else, yet only a very small fraction have been explored. These nuraghi towers that Sardinia is famous for, date from the Bronze age, the middle of the second millennium BC. Until just a few years ago some were still being used as shepherd huts. A nuraghe could be a single tower, but were very often more complex consisting of a central tower surrounded by circular defensive towers that were formed in truncated cones built of dressed stone, with corbel-vaulted internal chambers. The most famous of these nuraghe is Su Nuraxi. It consists of a large central tower surrounded by 4 towers which is enclosed by an additional wall with 7 towers. A large village, of which only a small part has even been excavated, surrounded all this. It is located just west of the village of Barumini, on the eastern edge of the widest plain in Sardinia that runs from Cagliari to Oristano. It is on the south end, at the foot of, the Giara of Gesturi plateau (yes, the one with the famous wild horses). A vast panorama can be seen from Su Nuraxi, the Giara, ancient volcano cones, the ruins of a Medieval castle on another volcanic cone, all set in an arid dry climate colored in shades of ochre.
