Cathedral of Holy Mary Assumption in Kielce. The main cathedral of Kielce was the first church of the city, first mentioned along with it's foundation in 1171. Built originally in romanesque was very popular with the Royal family and the local potentates and bishops, who rebuilt and modernized it on frequent occasions. The main altar was designed by the famous Italian master, Fontana. Approximately at the same time, the special painting presenting the Assumption of Holy Mary was brought to the cathedral from Rome where it was created by Szymon Czechowicz. In 1782 the Polish primate Michal Poniatowski established a unique etching on the front wall presenting the Polish alphabet, Arabic numerals, standard weights and measures and the main principles of the catholic religion for the education of the people.
