Caption
The locality of the former castle was inhabited already 4000 years ago. In the late middle ages the castle was erected and Burkheim (then also known as Burgheim - "Burg" meaning castle) grew to a small city mostly due to the border to france which is only few hundred meters away in the river Rhein and the resulting customs. The castle was destroyed between 1672 and 1676. It's ruin is private property now and owned by a winery, hence only the back side can be approached closely.
