Construction of the military airfield at the small village of Steeple Morden began in 1939. It was used initially by the RAF and later by the USAAF 355th Fighter Group and was finally closed in 1946. All that remains of the airfield now are remnants of the perimeter track and parts of the runways. The striking memorial with the P51 Mustang propeller was dedicated in 1981. A map of the airfield that's displayed on a pedestal to one side of the memorial has been copied into the panorama so that it can be seen by tilting the viewer down to the base.
