Back in the late 1980s a team of archaeologists from Cornell University and Ireland surveyed numerous crannogs and other structures in and around Lough Ennell, in central Ireland.

As a part of that team, this location has personal history for me. The crannog in the lake and neighboring ring fort on land have historical importance related to King Maelseachlinn II and they are mentioned in various Irish manuscripts from long ago.

Although hard to see, the clump of trees in the lake grows from a large pile of stones, which once supported dwellings and defensive works. The rath on land consists of an earthen bank and ditch, once enclosing its own structures and protecting its inhabitants and their livestock.
