Without glass, tropical plants would not do well in upstate New York, given the long cold winters it experiences. The glass roofs and walls of a greenhouse allow sunlight in for the plants while trapping heat inside to warm the plants. Various automated devices control the temperature, relative humidity, etc., by opening and closing vents and window shades. The Liberty Hyde Bailey Conservatory houses one of several plant collections that make up the Liberty Hyde Bailey Hortorium in the Plant Biology Section of the School of Integrative Plant Science, and is maintained by the Cornell University Agricultural Experiment Station.
Cornell has many other greenhouses, both on campus and off, that are vital for hundreds of teaching courses and research projects for a wide variety of plants, including many types of crops.
