The tunnel was hand blasted through solid rock on the waterfront. It was built in 1860 under the supervision of John Hoskins, a Cornish miner, to provide a deep water berth for the Bartlett sailing ships. It was a unique solution to a ship cargo handling problem. The tunnel measures approximately 80 feet long, 8 1/2 feet high and 8 feet wide.Location
