Long ago and far away in a physics classroom at Purdue University we freshmen were introduced to the concept of the "simple machine," of which there were said to be six. These were the lever, the wheel and axle, the pulley, the inclined plane, the wedge, and the screw. Our elderly prof then postulated that the wheel and axle and the pulley were the same simple machine, and that the inclined plane was in fact a wedge by another name, and that the screw was simply a wedge wrapped around an axis, thus reducing the number of simple machines to three rather than six.

Be that as it may, it is generally agreed that simple machines can be combined to form more complex machines, and tools are a combination of one or more of these six (or three) simple machines.

As I look around my garage I see complex machines- the Studebaker 1956 Golden Hawk and 1963 Avanti, air compressor, lathe, drill press, and many tools made up of less complex combinations of simple machines such as the engine hoist, hydraulic press, floor jack and a myriad of hand tools. Even the pull-down stairs in the ceiling are a machine, a lever operating against a spring.
