The famous Briare aqueduct which carries the Canal latéral à la Loire over the River Loire on a total length of 662 meters was first opened in September of 1896 after 6 years works. Since 1976 it is now a registered historic monument in France. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Briare_aqueduct
