This picture was taken nearly ten years ago at one of the most famous sites in Oregon -- Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. Although this location still exists and looks very much the same, it is no longer accessible because much of the site is closed as the region recovers from the Eagle Creek Fire in 2017.

In that event, a large forest fire burned through the entire gorge. Firefighters managed to save the lodge at the falls and the surrounding hillsides, so the attraction is largely unscathed. Nevertheless, damage caused by the fire makes much of the surrounding area unstable, so it is not safe to get too close to the waterfall. Thus, the government has closed off much of the site for the time being. It should reopen eventually, but for now it is a much different place.
