This brand new amazing ship, the MV Jean Anne, just entered service as a pure car truck carrier shipping as many as 3,000 cars each trip it makes between Hawaii and San Diego California. Shot from atop the midship navigation light mast, you are viewing the weather deck (11 decks above the keel!) and the Pasha Group's car terminal where the cars are driven on and off the ship on one of two built in ramps - nice view of the Port of San Diego's National City Harbor too. The ship even has a few car decks that can be raised so the ceiling is almost twice the height so the ship can alternately be loaded with big trucks or special oversized rolling stock. The stern ramp can handle rolling stock weighing as much as 100 tons. One huge slow speed diesel engine efficiently turns this roll on/roll off ship's single propeller via direct drive - no reduction gears.

What makes this ship unique is that it is the only US flagged, US built, US manned pure car truck carrier. We don't build many big commercial ships in the United States because our labor rates are not very competitive. We have a law though, the Jones Act, which requires that a ship that only operates between two US ports, must be US built, flagged and manned. The law is intended to ensure the United States continues to have shipyards capable of building big ships and continues to have a few merchant mariners in case those capabilities are needed for national defense. So, the Jean Anne is a rare example of a US crewed ship built at an American yard, VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula Mississippi (www.vthm.com).

Talk about marketplace - this owner just paid to have this ship built and is now busy moving cars.

You can read more about the ship at www.PashaHawaii.com or watch a couple of time lapse movies from during its construction on my web site www.MaritimeNewMedia.com.

I submitted a French Market pano for the 'World Heritage' WWP - if you were expecting another of those.
