The river Jerte gives name to a well known valley in Spain whose climate conditions and richness in water allow the growth of a very important production of best quality cherries. The mountain slopes have been transformed in order to plant different varieties of cherry trees and to obtain the best fruit from spring to early summer. The original forest has dissapeared in the most productive part of the valley, although it´s still quite well preserved in several areas, particularly in the North side of the mountains —chestnut trees mainly—, and in the less accesible zones of the South side —oaks in the highest areas, and diverse species in the wet and shaded gorges—. "Las Nogaledas" —the name evokes a place abundant in walnut trees—, is a good example of this; it´s an interesting place to visit, following the path under the trees which climbs up along the stream in a sequence of beautiful waterfalls.
