Andy Roddick's Last Game

American Andy Roddick officially stepped into retirement last September 5th (2012) at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the site of his lone Grand Slam triumph, with a 6-7(1), 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-4 loss to another former US Open champion, Argentine Juan Martin del Potro.

“For the first time in my career, I’m not sure what to say,” said Roddick, addressing the crowd following the match. “Oh gosh, where do I start? Since I was a kid I’ve been coming to this tournament and I felt lucky to sit where all of you are sitting today and to watch this game, to see the champions that have come and gone. I’ve loved every minute of it.

“It’s been a road, a lot of ups, a lot of downs, a lot of great moments. I’ve appreciated your support along the way. I know I certainly haven’t made it easy for you at times, but I really do appreciate it and love you guys with all my heart. Hopefully I’ll come back to this place someday and see all of you again.”

Roddick, the 2003 champion at US Open, finishes his career with a 612-213 match record and 32 titles.

The game was played at Arthur Ashe Stadium, a part of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center located within Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in the New York City borough of Queens, is the main tennis stadium of the US Open, the last of each year's four Grand Slam tournaments. The stadium is named after the famous African-American tennis player, Arthur Ashe, who won the inaugural US Open in which professionals could compete in 1968.
