Wanamaker's was one of the first department stores in the United States when it opened in 1876. Its flagship building at 1300 Market Street was completed in 1903. After the dissolution of Wanamaker's in 1995, the building has housed a succession of department stores, most recently Macy's.

In 1956, Wanamaker's created their Christmas Light Show, a light and music show. The show continues each year, even with changes of ownership of the building, because of its popularity as a Philadelphia tradition.
