A pub is a curious place to think of as a crossroad. In movies, a protagonist will, in the middle of their character arc, be at a bar getting psychiatric help from the bartender. That therapy, and a lot of whiskey, generally leads to a decision, which becomes the crux of character development. Didn’t Casablanca take place in a bar? That was an emotional crossroad. Stay with Rick or move on? Okay, so that didn’t really involve drinks but a piano and to play or not to ‘play it again, Sam’. Pubs also serve as the place people go to meet others, decide to date or not to date. Do you keep drinking or stop? So many decisions, hard liquor or beer or wine, mixed drink or straight-up, beer on tap or in a bottle, sit at the bar or find a booth/table, etc… all very deep choices to make. Seriously, I find the Up & Under to be a place where I’ve meet many people from all over, as far away as South Africa in this joint. I spent a good portion of the World Cup games at this pub. Towards the end of that tournament people from all over attended the games. It felt like a meeting place. A place where everyone paused for a game and shared the thrill and adrenaline, the despair of defeat or the thrill of victory, and then moved on with their day. Sort of meeting at a crossroad then taking a path away after the event is done. I feel like a crossroad is a place of gathering and choice. In that sense I offer up the Up & Under as a Crossroad. Please enjoy and if you are ever in the area please stop by. Let me know and I’ll join you if I’m not already there. Cheers ~Kat
