At the history crossing, Castle Square shows buildings of various periods. The square’s official appellation is different, Place du Château is widely acknowledged in the city and used to indicate this spot, of course that’s shorter than Place Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny!
The dungeon, made of pebble stones from the Loire River and built in the 12th Century, was a former court. Just in front of it, at the opposite part of the square, is Saint Étienne Church. It was initially built around 1300 but several times has been destroyed and rebuilt. It stands close to a small medieval house. Other dwellings standing on the square were built in the 18th and 19th Centuries.
Castle Square is the historic center of Roanne. It’s has been completely renewed in 2006.
